How do teeth get discolored?

The natural color of teeth is different for every person. The colors can broadly be classified in four categories, which are reddish brown, reddish yellow, gray and reddish gray. The teeth can get discolored from poor oral hygiene, smoking and consumption of dark colored fluids such as wine, coffee and cola. Teeth may also get discolored from certain types of antibiotics. A dentist can perform thorough check to know the reason for discoloration and take appropriate steps to brighten teeth.

Teeth whitening procedure

Tooth whitening is a simple procedure which can be completed in one visit. The dentist at our office starts the procedure with examination of teeth. We take pictures of teeth and measure the brightness using a shade scale. Although there are teeth whitening products available on the market, an in-office whitening process is more effective and safe. The whitening process begins with application of gels to protect gums from whitening agents.

Carbamide peroxide and hydrogen peroxide are used as oxidants for the purpose of whitening teeth. These agents get into the porous enamel layer of teeth and clear stain through the process of oxidation. A special light is used for accelerating the process. The results are quickly visible after the treatment. Patients are provided necessary guidelines which helps them retain the brightness of teeth for long.
